Oral nasal fistulas are most common in breeds prone to periodontal disease. Also, Dachshunds and other long-muzzled breeds are especially over-represented. Properly prepared periosteal and mucoperiosteal flaps should be performed to cover post-surgery defects. When tissue is thin or diseased, this presents an added challenge and likely is an obstacle without experience and special training.
